I've always thought that the conclusion that Sam drew that she was supposed to let go of Jack and move on based on their "conversation" on the ship was more than a bit of an over-reaction, but this piece makes the transition more natural and understandable. Too bad for Sam that human relationships don't really lend themselves to logical analysis and mathematical modelling!
