Hide and Seek with Tweek

Today, just as I was leaving to get my iPhone, Minni went ballistic. We had thought it was Squirrel, but...

Well. I'll let Minni tell the story below:


LOOK WHAT MINNI FOUND! COME SEE! COME SEE!!!



FINALLY! Minni's peoples came out of the house to see what was wrong with Minni!


Minni senses are tingling! *sniff sniff sniff sniff!* There is something here in Minni's backyard!


On the hunt: Minni will find it!

IT'S RIGHT HERE! LOOK, MINNI'S PEOPLES! LOOK!!!


It's a Possum! XD Isn't he adorable? (Well, he is in this pic, at least. You didn't see his teeth!)

We named him Tweek - Porchae's idea - because he was rather twitchy. Poor little dude was scared out of his mind. He kept baring his teeth at us, but he didn't move. I half wonder if he was injured or stuck... I'll check in the morning. If he's still there... What do y'all think we should do? Obviously we can't touch him; are there services for that kind of thing?

If he's still there, get a shovel and lift the boards off of him. (Make sure Minni is inside first!) If he's injured, get some heavy leather gardening gloves and a thick jacket on, and try to pick him up. If you have a dog kennel, put him in it and drive him to Animal Control or your local wildlife rehab center. Possums LOVE dog food, so give him some kibble and some water.

If you flip him on his back, chances are he'll stiffen up and play dead. It's really creepy, because his muscles will do this thing where he really will FEEL like a dead animal! It's kinda cool, too. You can totally handle him when he's like that, he almost goes into a trance.

Luckily we didn't need them. We've seen neither head nor tail of Mr. Tweek since Sunday. Which is probably for the best, but I bet he's still around here somewhere!

I once lived in a house that had a crawlspace that had an opening into the cabinet under my bathroom sink. (weird house!) I had a family of possums move in! I had to catch them and relocate them, it was a mom and four babies. I lured them out one at a time with dog food, and then kenneled them.

That house also had raccoons in the attic and squirrels in the walls. :-O

If a possum is out during the day, and it's not trapped, then there is a high likelihood it is rapid. (thanks Billy The Exterminator)

They do have very dangerous and sharp teeth, so extra caution is advised.

O_O You think so? Because he disappeared after Sunday... He wasn't foaming at the mouth or anything. I mean, I know those little guys are just crawling with disease, and we do get notifications from the city every year or so that some coyote or possum or racoon is in the area with rabies.

That would be super creepy!

They don't always foam at the mouth. Like adoan6 said, if they're out during the day, be extra careful. If they're not showing any signs of fear or nervousness around dogs or humans, or walking like they're a bit drunk, then you need to be extra careful.
