fantastic_jackie: (Cillian Murphy)
I went to see this movie with my coworkers Friday night; it was our Team Outing. We got 3 hours and enough of a team budget to have a cheap meal and tickets to see the film. I had been dreading it, what with Oliver Stone being the mind behind it all, but had determined to enjoy myself. Well... that was unnecessary.

I can't stand Oliver Stone, but this movie... Holy cow, this movie was excellent. Really, it was brilliant!

I was extremely surprised at how a-political it was, by and large. - Oh, there were some things, but it was about Wall Street, not pointing fingers in Washington. Which is exactly as it should have been, because it affects everyone and everyone was involved in bringing it to where we are today.

I'm gonna go unabashedly all financial/economic on y'all....

If you don't understand what happened in 2008's crash, you'll have a hard time following this movie... )

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this movie for everyone. It is a really good movie, but if you're not into examining the 2008 economic spiral and pondering the systemic situation in which we as a nation and even world find ourselves today, it will only frustrate you. - Though you may enjoy the characters' saga, which was pretty enjoyable.

However, if you want to know more about what happened in 2008 and don't mind a few mental gymnastics that will call you to watch the film another time or three, I'd say this is an excellent way to get a good piece of beginner's understanding.

Do y'all remember when crazy cons like me were all outraged at the idea that the government would be controlling the salaries of corporations and the liberals were all like, "Oh, you fearmongers. It's only for companies that took the bailouts. It won't ever go any farther than that. You conspiracy therorists..."

Of course, they conveinently ignored the quote from... Barney Frank, was it? Who said that he wanted Congress to have oversight over all executive salaries and bonuses.

Well, the Fed - oh geez, I think I have libertarian-like knee jerks to just mentioning the Fed now... - is now stepping up to the plate with a plan...

Fed Outlines Plan to Police Bank Pay

The Federal Reserve would police banks' pay policies to ensure they don't encourage employees to take reckless gambles like those that contributed to the financial crisis, according to a proposal unveiled Thursday.

Unlike a Treasury plan to slash pay at certain companies that were bailed out with large sums of taxpayer money, the Fed proposal would cover thousands of banks, including many that never received a bailout.

The Fed would not actually set compensation. Instead, the central bank would review — and could veto — pay policies that could cause too much risk-taking by executives, traders or loan officers.

Okay. Exactly how FAR does this administration have to go before liberals finally say, "Uh... Hey... What? Now wait a second..."

You're going to tell me the only way you can ensure that this kind of economic recession won't happen again is for the federal government to control how much executives are paid?! You're going to tell me that such will even have an effect on preventing recessions?!

And it has to be the FED??!!

I thought we believed in freedom in this country!!

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CONSTITUTION?!

Check this out - screenshot taken at 1:51 AM CST:

If you go to the site, these numbers are constantly changing, constantly being updated. I'd like to read that bottom number there - the big one tited US Unfunded Liablities. It says:

105 Trillion, 673 Billion, 794 Million, 154 Thousand, 745 Dollars

These things grow by the second. The only three that tick steadily, slowly downward are the Private Debt, Mortgage Debt, and Personal Debt amounts.

Adding these totals, you owe just to pay for what we've spent and obligated ourselves to spend as a country thus far as of October 14, 2009 1:51 AM CST:

You Owe Uncle Sam: $383,190

That's how much the federal government has spent for you. How much you owe and I owe and everyone else in the country owes. Each one of us!! How many years would it take you to make that?! This doesn't include any personal debt you may have - this is just for our national expenditures, past and future.

So... when I talk about the National Debt, y'all now know what I'm talking about. 8) SHARE IT!

Politicians will tell you it doesn't matter, that national debt is good for the country. Really?? Does anyone think that balance sheet looks like a good thing? It's not even possible to pay all that as it is, and it's growing!! I think it's terrifying. Imagine what it will look like tomorrow, let alone 10, 15, 20 years from now!!

...like the old school.

Or Schoolhouse Rock, which my parents played for me growing up. We were watching it the other day, and I've been singing different ones ever since. I'd forgotten about Tyrannasaurus Debt. This one isn't my favorite, but it DOES make a pretty good point!

GLOBAL WARMING UPDATE

Sorry for the caps. Just.. you know, when we're talking about Global Warming, we're talking about saving the planet! And I want to feel important.

A little Googling... Well, actually a lot of Googling produced this intriguing nugget:

EPA Suppresses Global COOLING Report

Wha- What's this? The EPA? CBS, you don't mean the... Environmental Protection Agency? Suppressing reports that disprove Global Warming predictions? NO! Why would they do something like that???

The Environmental Protection Agency may have suppressed an internal report that was skeptical of claims about global warming, including whether carbon dioxide must be strictly regulated by the federal government, according to a series of newly disclosed e-mail messages.

Less than two weeks before the agency formally submitted its pro-regulation recommendation to the White House, an EPA center director quashed a 98-page report that warned against making hasty "decisions based on a scientific hypothesis that does not appear to explain most of the available data."

Well, gee, that sounds really important. Whether carbon dioxide should be regulated... before making hasty decisions...? HEY!! Do you think that maybe this had something to do with the Cap and Trade bill coming up in the House?

Noooo! I must.... I must be completely out of my mind to draw such conclusions. No one in Washington or the EPA has any outside interests in the passing of that bill! They just want to, you know, save the planet!

Clean air.

Clean water.

Hug the Earth.

Democrats and Congress have a monopoly on this stuff, you know. They care.

Well... Okay, so maybe there are a few Representatives and Senators that have some pretty questionable alliances with corporations that stand to make a lot via Stock up-ticks from either new market securities or new technologies, but hey! It's all a coincidence, right? Yeah. Yeah!! Of COURSE it is! Because they care. This isn't political!

The EPA official, Al McGartland, said in an e-mail message to a staff researcher on March 17: "The administrator and the administration has decided to move forward... and your comments do not help the legal or policy case for this decision."

WHAT??! WHAT did he say??! The comments don't help policy decisons? But I thought... I thought this was science?? Pure, unbiased, facts-only science!

The EPA is political??!

NOOO! I don't... I WON'T believe it! I just... the outrage! Clearly, this is all right wing spin! It's talking points and just... flat out lies!! CBS is obviously a skewed right-wing talking points media machine. Just like that evil Faux News!

If this is passed, the United States will fundamentally change as we know it. I am dead serious. This is an unprecedented power grab.

Read through the links; I haven't had any time to complete my post about this, but it is SERIOUSLY. BAD. NEWS. For the economy. For your taxes. And for our freedoms in this country. You think you lost freedoms under Bush? Wait until this gets passed!

There are representatives on the fence still! The NATION is on the phone to Washington - CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!! Mine is one of the ones leading the charge against it.

Forget parties! Forget the environment. This is NOT for the environment. The projections are that it could lower the temperature by .05 DEGREES in 2050!!! This is NOT about the environment! It's about the government taking unprecidented control over business and ENERGY, about under-the-table deals between the government and giant corporations, about bribes that have been caught on tape for representatives to support this legislation! It is a GIANT HIDDEN TAX!! That will COST us more jobs than it will create!! Just look at Spain!!

I am at work. I can't get on the phone anymore. This is ridiculously important. Call them NOW. The pressure needs to increase and stay at volume! They were talking about shutting down the communications at one point! The Republican minority leader was doing the House version of the filibuster over this!

These links to forum topics have all the information you need; I don't have time to neatly compile it for you.

Watch it unfold on C-Span

ETA: It passed. Now it's on to the Senate. All hail the government; we bow and grovel at their wiser-than-thou wisdom and money-lined pockets.

Goodbye American Business. The House just passed the bill that will really make the people complain about outsourcing jobs.

In the middle of a recession. Tch. GE is literally jumping for joy now...

YES!! He's saying no at the current moment to more Auto Bailouts!! He even mentioned the naughty "Bankruptcy" word that everyone in Washington has been trying to practically eliminate from the English language! (I've just been waiting for some stupid Senator or Representative to come out and say, "Bankruptcys are a thing of the past. We can't afford to have bankruptcy in America anymore.")

He demanded concessions from creditors and the unions!!! among others in order to consider anything. This is actually a process called Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, but he's calling for it before they do reach that limit. - But if they do hit Chapter 11, the government will "help them," whatever that means. - Which is backwards, and I'd prefer if he'd just not consider anything at all. - Hey, I love GM. American made. They're heavily tied to the company I work at, but no company is too big to fail.

White House Questions Viability of GM, Chrysler

The most recet update includes the possibility of a $6 Billion bailout of Chrysler if they merge with Fiat successfully. But hey! I'll take what I can get! GO PRESIDENT OBAMA!!

If he really does stick by this, I will send him a letter of thanks!

Edit: This story link is changing. Rather than post new articles, they're updating and deleting previous bits of information.

That bit about the govt being able to "pull the plug" on a business in America? It would be far less creepy if he wasn't referring to more than just the bailouts... That, I am not pleased about. At all. No silver lining.

This post is not a place for the partisan vilification of any political party. People are at fault, and history if we read it without bias clearly tells how we got here, but we should focus on the solutions and identify present and future obstructions to those solutions be they people or policies rather than engage in petty finger-pointing. If it must be brought up, bring it up, but move beyond it: we're here, and now we need to deal with it.

Today's topic is one that economists have been talking about in greater frequency: How much danger is the dollar facing? It's a hard one to discuss, especially in terms of finding solutions, but we need to talk about it anyway.

Dollar Dangers )

Where does that leave us? Now that we understand what all this spending is doing to the Dollar, can we afford to take the risk that all this spending will drive us out of the recession? It could happen; no one knows what the economy will do in the future. All we can do is look at past and present data, and plan and guess based off of that.

We have two options, and they are pretty black and white: 1) We continue spending and hope it works or 2) We stop spending, stop bailing out, stop monetizing and let the recession take its full course.

Both options involve a lot of risk and a lot of pain, but that's where we are right now. What are your thoughts?

I received this e-mail from a co-worker. I couldn't help editing it a bit, but it has some very good information in it relating to stores and closing. They say it's for the purpose to prevent purchasing invalid Gift Cards this Christmas Season, but I'd say it's good for sales, too. ;)

It's important to note that not all of these companies are filing for bankruptcy or ceasing to exist; several are simply closing a few stores, and while it may be indicative of the future on a larger, darker scale, I doubt companies like Starbucks really face a completely dim outlook. ;)

BE CAREFUL When BUYING GIFT CARDS this holiday.

It may be better to give cash or a present this year. Here's why:

Stores cross America are being scheduled to close after the Christmas season due to economic difficulties and bankruptcy. If the store closes, the gift cards would be no good.

Here are some of the announced closings. Of course these companies would love you to give them money for a gift card that would be no good later on. Perhaps some home made jam or a $5 bill would be safer, since once a store declares bankruptcy they don't have to honor their gift cards. Better yet, give the gift of food storage.

STORE CLOSINGS AND LAYOFFS: By the end of Dec. 2008 as announced

Starbucks, Dillard's, J.C. Penny, Dell, Sprint Nextel, and Circuit City, to name a few... )

Do you want to understand what caused this economic crisis? Really? And who is to really blame? - Not that mass panic has no part here, but there's always a catalyst.

Check out this video below. I was looking for the SNL skit that NBC deleted from their website the web that properly placed the blame where it should lie when I found this instead: A banned video by the Obama campaign because they don't want the truth getting out about what really caused this mortgage problem that's pulling the entire economy(ies) with it.

I'd intended to make a post about the information contained within it, but 1) I kept wondering at my time to do it and 2) I couldn't have said it any better nor could I have made it this understandable! Check it out! You can understand this stuff, for real!

And you'd better watch it soon; I've noticed that many of the anti-dem political videos I've been watching on YouTube have disappeared. I know there's a way to record things from YouTube... I really need to Google that.

Granted, I still don't support McCain, but the FACTS in this video? Who can deny them?
